How Do Dangerous Eye Floaters Happen?

As the substance called vitreous in the back of your eye begins the process of breaking down into smaller pieces you can see bugs "swimming" in your vision. Grey or black specks that seem to be floating in mid air in front of your eyes are the result of the vitreous humor in your eye liquifying and shrinking over time.

These tiny particles will oftentimes float around within your eye and can look like streaks or lines in your vision, or grey or black dots that move around in your eyes. Getting opaque spots that move back and forth in your eyes as you look around are due to particles floating in the vitreous gel.

If you try and take a moment to make the floaters stop by staring at them, it doesn't work because they move with your eyes.
